Why You Can’t Pull Higher on Pull-Ups

A High Pull-Up looks simple at first: you do a normal Pull-Up, pull harder, and eventually your chest or even your hips reach the bar. In reality, it doesn’t work quite like that. You can be strong at regular Pull-Ups and still struggle to pull significantly higher.

The reason is simple: a High Pull-Up isn’t just a normal Pull-Up with more strength. You need relative strength, explosiveness, and slightly different technique. If you only train regular Pull-Ups, you’ll eventually reach a point where you just can’t get much higher.

Regular Pull-Ups Only Take You So Far

With a normal Pull-Up, it’s usually enough to get your chin over the bar. You pull relatively vertically, finish the rep at the top, and lower yourself back down. For regular Pull-Ups, that’s completely fine.

With a High Pull-Up, you need to go beyond that point. You don’t just want to get your chin over the bar — you want to pull significantly higher. To do that, it’s not enough to simply add a few more reps. You need to learn how to produce force faster and slightly change the pulling angle so you don’t just “stick” to the bar.

Relative Strength Makes High Pull-Ups Easier

Calisthenics is heavily based on relative strength. You’re moving your own body through space. The stronger you are relative to your bodyweight, the easier Weighted Pull-Ups, Muscle-Ups, and High Pull-Ups become.

That doesn’t mean you have to be extremely lean or shredded. But a healthy bodyweight and sensible body-fat level can make a noticeable difference. If you’re carrying a lot of unnecessary weight, every Pull-Up becomes harder — especially when you want to pull explosively and high.

Still, bodyweight is only one part of the equation. The bigger factor is training. And Weighted Pull-Ups are one of the best exercises for building the strength you need.

Weighted Pull-Ups for More Strength

If you want to pull higher, you need to get stronger. Weighted Pull-Ups are extremely useful for that. But simply adding weight isn’t enough. You need to train them in a way that actually improves your strength.

I would usually work with lower rep ranges, for example 3 sets of 3 reps, or generally around 3–5 reps per set. The weight should be heavy enough to make the reps challenging, but your technique still needs to stay clean.

The stronger you become at Weighted Pull-Ups, the lighter your own bodyweight will feel. And that carries over directly to High Pull-Ups. Your regular Pull-Up becomes more powerful, you have more strength in reserve, and you don’t have to fight through every rep.

Explosiveness Is the Real Game Changer

Strength alone isn’t enough. You also need to learn how to use that strength quickly. That’s exactly why explosive Pull-Ups are so important.

The goal isn’t necessarily to pull all the way to your hips right away. At first, the goal is simply to move from the dead hang into the top position as fast as possible. Imagine someone telling you to pull as high as you can, as fast as you can.

That same intention should stay there during Weighted Pull-Ups too. Even though the added weight will naturally make you move slower, you still want to pull aggressively. That explosive intent helps you produce more force at once.

The start from the dead hang is also important. Fully extend your arms, briefly reset, and then initiate the movement cleanly. Don’t just pull with your arms — actively engage your shoulder blades first. That first impulse makes a big difference.

High Pull-Up Technique Is Different

Once you’ve built enough strength and explosiveness, you also need to adjust your technique. A High Pull-Up is not exactly the same movement as a regular Pull-Up.

With a normal Pull-Up, you usually use around a shoulder-width grip and pull more or less straight upward. For a High Pull-Up, a slightly narrower grip can work better — roughly narrow enough that one hand could fit between your hands. A strong overhand grip can also help you stay more stable on the bar and later move above it more easily, for example in a Muscle-Up.

You also want your elbows to turn slightly inward. This changes your pulling path. Instead of pulling straight up, you move in a slightly curved path around the bar. That helps you get beyond the point where a normal Pull-Up usually ends.

Conclusion

If you can’t pull higher, the problem usually isn’t that you simply need more regular Pull-Ups. High Pull-Ups require more relative strength, stronger Weighted Pull-Ups, explosive reps, and the right technique.

Don’t just train heavy — train fast too. Work on clean dead-hang starts, actively use your shoulder blades, and practice High Pull-Up technique with a narrower grip, strong overhand grip, and a better pulling path. That’s how you stop just getting your chin over the bar and start pulling significantly higher.
